Top 5 things to do in Athens
1. The Acropolis
When we think of Athens, it is likely that the Acropolis image is the first to come to mind. This is one of the most iconic and easily recognizable monuments in the world, a place where visitors can virtually go back in time and experience this unique period when Greece was synonymous with poetry, philosophy and civilization. This old passion for culture stands today as an interesting discount for all students from the European Union.
2. The Agora
Like, and indeed foreshadowing, Roman forums, Agora is a beautiful place to visit in itself, and in addition offers superb views of the Acropolis. As you walk you can admire the ruins of many ancient palaces and beautiful reconstructions. It definitely is not in Las Vegas!
3. Syntagma Square
Regarding the main center of Athens public transport network, it is likely that you will go through Syntagma Square at one time or another. In fact, the place is worth a visit, not just crossing! The Greek Parliament and the National Gardens are nearby, and you can admire the succession at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The Greek version of this ceremony is very different from the English!
4. City tour by bike ... free!
Athens is a very polluted city, and you will not want to contribute to this problem! Traffic jams are an integral part of the city, which means visiting the Greek capital by car can be a very complicated task. Fortunately, there are free bike tours during the weekend to help you solve these two problems. Kids will love it, and parents have found a good way to make the tire! Ask your hotel for more information on these bicycle tours.
5. The beaches
In general, the tourist on vacation in Athens is not expected to go to the sea. It is a mistake! Close to the city center you have many beautiful beaches and easy access. I advise you to organize a picnic or make sandwiches: in this way you will be free to move away from the crowd (and save a few dollars!). The most beautiful beaches of Athens are south of the city and you need to take the metro and bus to get there. Ask your hotel or a tourist information office to find out how to get to the beach of your choice.
